An Honor Bestowed While Under the Knife: The Story of Farhad Soofi's Coronation Medal
The Coronation Medal was created to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, which took place on May 6, 2023. It is the first Canadian commemorative medal to celebrate a coronation. The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is responsible for administering the King Charles III Coronation Medal program, with the medal being awarded to 30,000 deserving individuals.
Among the recipients of this prestigious honour is Farhad Soofi, a human rights advocate and social activist from Coquitlam. Farhad was recognized for his many years of volunteer and charitable work within the community. The medal was presented to his wife, Mary, on August 27, as Farhad was unable to attend the ceremony due to being hospitalized after undergoing open-heart surgery.
Despite his current health challenges, Farhad, who is still recovering and suffering from persistent coughing, shared details about his condition. During a vacation in Sri Lanka, a routine check-up—recommended by his son-in-law—revealed a heart problem, which led to immediate surgery upon his return to Vancouver.
Farhad voiced his concerns about the Canadian healthcare system and plans to launch a campaign encouraging the government to prioritize preventive measures for certain diseases and major surgeries. He firmly believes that prevention is not only better for individuals but also more cost-effective for the government.
Farhad, who immigrated to Canada over fifty years ago, has been actively involved in social causes since his arrival. He and Mary, his wife of 39 years, have built a life rooted in mutual understanding, despite their cultural differences.
On the day of the medal ceremony, while Farhad was undergoing surgery in the hospital, an honorary medal was being prepared for this kind-hearted individual in recognition of his lifelong dedication to helping others.
