Metis Citizens and Leaders Come Together For Annual General Assembly

The Metis Nation of Ontario’s 31st Annual General Assembly took place over the weekend and brought together Metis leaders and citizens along with local government officials in support of the MNO. 

The celebrations began with the canoe arrival, which saw local politicians, Penetanguishene Mayor Doug Rawson, MP of Simcoe North Adam Chambers, along with the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Edith Dumot joining MNO dignitaries on a ‘paddle of friendship’ to arrive on the shores of Georgian Bay at Discovery Harbor. 

The theme of this year’s assembly was Telling Our Stories, where the MNO released the Metis National Council Expert Panel Report on the Historic Metis Communities in Ontario. These included reports on The Upper Great Lakes, Abitibi, Mattawa/Ottawa River and Northwestern Ontario.

Margaret Froh made it clear during her welcoming address that the Metis Nation of Ontario will continue to fight for self-governance for all Metis citizens, but will also continue to reach out to the First Nations Chiefs for an open dialogue.

President Froh has already reached out to assure Six Nations to say that they do not intend to infringe upon their traditional territory after a letter was sent to the MNO about concerns of a local council office in their area.

President Froh quickly responded to the letter assuring the community that the council office is only there to provide Metis citizens in the area with services such as education and health care resources.

While the Metis Nation of Ontario continues to share their stories, Lieutenant Governor Dumont says, “It means for me now, listening to your stories.”
