In our conversation with Jay Peters, Manager of Programming and Community Connections at Coquitlam Public Library, one message rang loud and clear: the Coquitlam Public Library is no longer a quiet, book-only space, it’s a vibrant hub for all members of the community.

The Coquitlam Public Library makes a significant and multi-dimensional impact in the Tri-Cities community by serving as more than just a place to borrow books, it’s a vital hub for connection, learning, and inclusion.

Jay shared how the library is deeply rooted in community outreach, including the Library Link, a bus service which makes weekly book deliveries to residents who may not be able to visit in person. This service gives access to hundreds of seniors, people with mobility issues and others who for what ever reason can not make it into the library during their operational hours. The library’s services are designed to be inclusive and accessible, welcoming newcomers, families, seniors, and youth alike.

Breaking the old stereotype of libraries as hushed spaces, Jay highlighted a variety of dynamic programs, including an exciting new offering featuring Yoto, a fun and interactive audio device for children that tells stories and sings songs. These types of innovations reflect the library’s commitment to making learning joyful and hands-on.

In addition, the Discovery Room is home to early STEAM programming, giving children the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math through play and experimentation.

Whether it’s through outreach, tech-forward learning, or just creating a welcoming space, Jay and his team are redefining what it means to be a library in today’s world, connecting people, sparking curiosity, and building community every step of the way.
