Recreation Takes a Spotlight in the New Year

January might seem quiet after the chaos of December, but there’s still plenty to do around Neepawa. The Neepawa Public Library, which recently extended its opening hours, has put out its packed activities schedule for January, and the Town of Neepawa Recreation Department has released its new Winter Activities Guide.

Rrain Prior - Local Journalism Initiative

Speaking this week with the Neepawa Rotary Club, new rec director Cassandra Groen talks not just about that new initiative but a new collaboration with Home Assistance Neepawa and District (HAND), the Handi-Van, and ArtsForward to coordinate outings and social events for seniors. Groen says she has tried to continue the work of her predecessor Nicole Cooper but also put her own stamp on the role, such as with the Activities Guides.

Rotary club members brought to Groen’s attention the fact that there used to be a public recreation committee that worked in collaboration with the Rec Director role, although it has been abandoned for some time. It allowed for more public input into the community’s recreation department and also shouldered some of the duties that are now falling to Groen. It is something she suggests she will be looking into for the future.

Also on today’s show are highlights from the recent Neepawa Titans hockey game against the Steinbach Pistons.
