New Westminster Council Discusses Long-Term Infrastructure Planning

At  a recent City Council meeting, Alexandru Misconiu, a resident delegate, emphasized the importance of long-term infrastructure planning in light of the city’s growth and evolving challenges. Misconiu referenced the historic example of London, England’s 19th-century overhaul of its sewage system, which helped curb the spread of cholera during a public health crisis.

“The people of London didn’t just solve the problem they were facing at that moment; they planned for the city’s future growth,” Misconiu said. “That kind of foresight is what kept their infrastructure resilient for over a century. We have the same responsibility now—to think ahead, not just react to what’s already happening.”

Misconiu’s remarks resonated with council members, prompting a discussion about the city’s current infrastructure initiatives. Councillor Patrick Johnstone outlined ongoing efforts, such as modernizing water and sewer systems to handle increased capacity, and integrating sustainability into new developments. He emphasized that New Westminster’s infrastructure planning considers both population growth and the impacts of climate change.

Councillor Nadine Nakagawa added that the city’s green infrastructure initiatives, such as rain gardens and flood mitigation projects, align with global best practices for resilient urban design. “We are planning for growth in a way that prioritizes sustainability and livability,” she said.

Mayor Patrick Johnstone closed the discussion with an assurance to the public:
"I don't want you to think that this planning for the future isn't on all of our minds. It is on all council's minds, all the time. We are well ahead of the game in understanding what our long-term needs are going to be in the decades ahead. I'm not going to say it's done and dusted. It's ongoing work that we continue to do."

The exchange underscored New Westminster’s commitment to proactive planning, aiming to build a city equipped to meet future challenges while maintaining a high quality of life for its residents. What is the 'thing' that made the difference, who is behind it, how does it work, and its success.
