At the December 2nd city council meeting, New Westminster City Council’s discussion on limiting vape shops sparked a robust debate about public health and youth safety. Concerns are growing over the impact of vaping on young people in the city.

Statistics highlight the urgency of the issue. According to the CDC, in 2020, there were 2,800 cases of severe lung injuries linked to vaping, along with 68 related deaths. While the number may seem small, experts warn this could be an early indication of a growing problem. Locally, a 2024 study indicates that over 55% of youth in the Fraser North Region, including New Westminster, who have tried vaping reported doing so within the past 30 days, emphasizing the urgency for preventive measures.

At the December 2nd city council meeting, Councillor Daniel Fontaine highlighted the city’s efforts to restrict vape shops, stating, “While vape shops are legal, I think as a city it would behoove us to look at limiting the total number of vape shops, just like we do with, for example, cannabis or liquor stores.” He further expressed concern about shops opening close to schools, stressing the need to protect young people.

Health officials stress the risks of vaping, citing long-term respiratory and cardiovascular impacts. Fraser Health reinforced this concern, stating: “We share your concern on vaping impacts on the New Westminster community, particularly youth. According to the 2024 McCreary Adolescent Health Survey one in five youth in the Fraser North Region, which includes New West, have used vape products and of the youth who have tried vaping over half, fifty-five percent, had vaped in the last thirty days. Vaping amongst youth and adolescents carries significant health risks.”
