Technology in the Classroom III: Enhancing the Middle School Curriculum
In this special three-part series, NACTV looks at the ways in which technology is used in the classrooms of Neepawa Collegiate and Neepawa Middle School, both as part of a specific curriculum and as part of the everyday classroom.
Rrain Prior – Local Journalism Initiative
In this final part of the series, we join a class at Neepawa Middle School to see the ways in which they interact with learning materials during class time, and also how technology has changed life for teachers outside of the classroom.
While the Manitoba provincial government announced this summer that personal devices were no longer allowed for students in middle schools, our visit in June, prior to the announcement, demonstrated how those devices were being used for educational purposes, and shows that the conversation around cell phones in schools is more complex than just calling them a distraction.
According to classroom teacher Carly Levandoski, as of the end of the 2023-24 school year, the school had approximately one device per two students, which means that half of her class is using personal devices to interact with the learning materials that she uses in the classroom, which include educational games, quizzes, and collaborative projects.
