Civic journalist Jake Boudrot reported that a mistrial was declared and charges were dropped against Daryl Lawrence Digout and Shelley Dawn Digout of Richmond County.

On October 28, during the first day of their trial at Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court, Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Services (PPS) announced that the Crown offered no evidence on a sexual exploitation charge, leading the judge to dismiss it. As the case progressed, the judge identified a conflict of interest, resulting in a mistrial.

PPS confirmed that a new trial will be scheduled for the remaining charges, which include sexual assault, sexual interference, and failure to appear. A new trial judge and dates are yet to be determined.

The charges stem from a May 26, 2023, report to Richmond County District RCMP, alleging possible sexual exploitation by the Digouts. The RCMP investigation uncovered that a young person was sexually assaulted by the couple in 2020. Both were arrested on May 29 in Barra Head and jointly charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and sexual exploitation.

Following their arrest, the RCMP issued a press release on June 9 indicating that the Digouts were missing. They were located on July 27 in Lynch’s River after a public sighting. Subsequently, they were charged with failing to appear for required fingerprinting. Despite their earlier disappearance, the Digouts were released from custody.

On October 12, they pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to appear, being at large on an undertaking, and the original sexual assault-related offenses. They opted to represent themselves and proceed with a joint trial.

CNIB Community Engagement Tour
Shelley Adams of the Canadian National Institute of the Blind (CNIB) provided insights into a recent tour across Cape Breton. The sessions visited local communities, offering residents opportunities to learn about CNIB’s services, including peer support, advocacy, technology training, and accessibility initiatives. Participants were encouraged to bring their devices for tech support.

Adams shared details about the tour's stops, the discussions held, and the feedback received. CNIB’s efforts aim to connect with the community and highlight resources available to those with visual impairments.

Eastern Counties Regional Library Strategic Planning
Eastern Counties Regional Library (ECRL) announced it has secured a $42,000 grant from the Library Development Fund to support strategic planning and community engagement.

The initiative, which began in August, involves consultations with stakeholders, including municipal partners, library staff, and the public. ATN Consultants, hired to coordinate the project, are gathering input through in-person sessions at library locations, online surveys, and a virtual meeting. Sessions were held at Petit de Grat Public Library on November 15 and Port Hawkesbury Public Library on November 16, with a virtual session following on November 21.

ECRL encourages community members to participate in shaping the library's future priorities.
