"I’m Here to Disrupt Politics as Usual to Get What We Deserve" - MLA Candidate Colter Simmonds

Colter Simmonds, the NDP candidate for MLA in Preston, is no stranger to community leadership. Speaking on **Community Update**, Simmonds emphasized his commitment to ensuring the Preston constituency—home to one of Canada's largest Black populations—receives the representation and resources it deserves.

“I started in 2021, not wanting anything to do with politics but wanting better for my community,” Simmonds shared. Now running in his third election in three years, he says he’s more prepared than ever. “I’m ready to do the work.”

Simmonds identified several pressing issues in Preston, including the lack of economic development, inadequate transportation, and housing concerns. “We don’t even have a bank in the riding,” he noted. “It speaks volumes about the neglect this area has faced.” He plans to push for housing solutions like rent-to-own programs and prefabricated homes to address affordability and generational wealth.

Safety, particularly gun violence, is another priority. “This issue requires collaboration between federal, provincial, and municipal governments,” he stressed. Simmonds is determined to disrupt traditional politics. “I’m not here to be an average politician. I’m here to make change.”

Community voices remain central to his campaign. He plans to establish a District 44 Community Unity Association to address local issues. “It’s about holding everyone accountable, from the councilor to the MP,” Simmonds explained.

His unwavering resolve has inspired residents, including seniors, who tell him, “I’ve voted the same way my whole life, but I believe in you.”
