St. Andrews Council Meeting Highlights: November 4, 2024

Community Appreciation Awards

The evening began with the presentation of the 2024 Community Appreciation Awards. Mayor Brad Henderson emphasized the importance of recognizing those who contribute tirelessly to the town’s vibrancy. “This community is built off volunteerism,” Henderson noted.

Among the honourees was David Lord, praised for his extensive involvement with local organizations, including the cemetery board and church. Henderson highlighted Lord’s pivotal role in recent church upgrades, adding, “He’s heavily involved in the community.”

Also recognized was Gregor Neill, a young volunteer firefighter who demonstrated exceptional commitment during a recent forest fire. Beyond firefighting, Neill dedicates his time to the minor hockey league, positively impacting the community.

Cindy Kohler received a special appreciation award for her behind-the-scenes efforts benefiting numerous local groups. “She designs websites free of charge for non-profits as well as posters for community events,” Henderson said, commending her invaluable contributions to various boards.

The Bayside Golf Course volunteers were also celebrated for their work maintaining one of the region’s most cherished golf courses.

Municipal Business

After the awards, the council transitioned to addressing municipal matters.

The first major item was the removal of historic designations from several properties, including the Cottage Craft Building, O’Brien House, and 312 Montague Street.

The council then tackled financial resolutions, starting with unanimous approval of a $500 grant for the 2025 Winter Warmer Festival, reaffirming its support for local cultural events.

Discussions then turned to the 2025 town budget. Deputy Mayor Kate Akagi led the deliberations on capital projects, weighing immediate infrastructure improvements against long-term fiscal responsibility. “We have a real problem with the structural things that we’re putting off,” Councillor Jamie Hirtle said, reflecting concerns about deferred maintenance.

One focal point was the proposed upgrade to Prince of Wales Street. The council debated balancing the preservation of historic trees with the benefits of adding a new trail. Chief Administrative Officer Chris Spear remarked, “The road itself should be taken care of one way or the other,” underscoring the complexity of the issue.

Closing Highlights

As the meeting concluded, Saint Croix MLA Kathy Bockus presented the King Charles III Coronation Medal to Surren Yoganathan for his outstanding work with the Multicultural Association of Charlotte County. “Helping our new neighbours find a true level of acceptance is Suren’s goal,” Bockus said, praising his efforts to foster community integration.
