Hundreds gather in St. Andrews, NB for Truth and Reconciliation

Over 200 people gathered at The Point in Saint Andrews on Monday at dusk to take part in Truth and Reconciliation Day. Many participants wore orange shirts in recognition of residential school survivors across Canada and in memory of the thousands of Indigenous children who never returned home. The event included a smudging. Elder Greg Mansfield officially awakened the drums before participants took part in a solemn walk around the Point. Saint Andrews Deputy Mayor Kate Akagi, a member of the Peskotomuhkati Nation was one of the event organizers.

"We get together to do this gathering and to remember the residential school children that went and the survivors that live here," said Akagi, "There are a few that are living here, and there are children that have grown up, and they are here in our territory. So we are honouring them by remembering what happened to them going through residential schools and what's happening to the survivors as they go on their healing journey."

This annual gathering serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of Canada's residential school system, while also encouraging reconciliation and healing within the community.

"Seniors for Climate" Demonstrate in St. Andrews

Seniors in St. Andrews took part in a national movement on Tuesday to raise awareness about the climate crisis. 

70 people gathered in Market Square this morning for Seniors for Climate Change, which happens to coincide with National Seniors Day. Many people at the event said that they were anxious about the future, especially for their families and future generations. 

"We're here today because October 1st used to be known as Seniors Day, and it's now been changed to appeal to the climate emergency that we're in," said one of the event organizers, Muriel Jarvis. "So it's now Seniors for Climate Day because we know that we are many, many seniors, a huge percentage of the population, and we have a vested interest in fighting climate change and asking for action from our governments. I have five grandchildren. I have been realizing for the last five or six years just what a crisis we're in with our climate and the state of the planet. Essentially, it's all because of humans and because of the values that we as humans hold, that we're the most important thing on the planet. And we're finding out that we're not."

Event participants told CHCO that they believe action is required to mitigate the impacts of climate change, especially in New Brunswick and Charlotte County, which has experienced damage in the last year. 

Bayside Golf Gals Hold Mrs Roper Romp in St. Andrews

Finally, a group of friends known as the Bayside Golf Gals brought flair and purpose to St. Andrews on Saturday, hosting a Mrs. Roper Romp down Water Street to raise funds for the local food bank. Inspired by a global trend, the romp celebrates the iconic Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company, blending retro fun with charity. Dressed in colourful muumuus, red wigs, and bold jewelry, the women channelled the beloved 1970s sitcom character while raising funds for a good cause.
