Strait Talk Episode 10
Gina MacDonald, Program Director of Cape Breton South Recruiting for Health (CBSRH), recently sat down with Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot to discuss the mission, evolution, and ongoing efforts of her organization. CBSRH is a community-driven nonprofit that has been instrumental in addressing the critical need for healthcare professionals in the Strait of Canso region.
MacDonald began by outlining the origins of CBSRH, explaining how it was formed in 2020 by a group of concerned citizens, business leaders, and Richmond County councillors. "The organization was born out of a recognition of the shared services between the Municipality of the County of Richmond and the Town of Port Hawkesbury," she said. "It started as a grassroots effort to create a regional presence focused on recruiting and retaining health care professionals in this area, and it has been growing steadily ever since."
While many are aware that CBSRH's primary mandate is to attract healthcare professionals to the Strait of Canso region, MacDonald highlighted some lesser-known aspects of the organization’s work. "Our efforts go beyond recruitment," she explained. "We are deeply involved in community building, ensuring that the professionals who choose to work here feel welcomed and supported. This involves everything from helping them find suitable housing to integrating them into the community and assisting their families."
One of the central challenges CBSRH faces is promoting, marketing, and effectively "selling" the region as an ideal place to live and work. MacDonald emphasized how crucial this aspect is to their overall strategy. "We are not just selling a job; we are selling a lifestyle," she said. "It’s about showcasing what makes this area special—our vibrant communities, natural beauty, and the quality of life that is unmatched in many larger urban centers. We want prospective health care professionals to see the Strait of Canso as not just a place to work, but a place to call home."
MacDonald also discussed a recent request for operational funding from the Municipality of the County of Richmond. This funding is critical for CBSRH to continue its work effectively. "Operational funding is essential for our day-to-day activities, from running recruitment campaigns to organizing community events," she said. "We are grateful for the support we've received so far, and we’re hopeful that continued funding will allow us to expand our efforts and bring even more healthcare professionals to the region."
Looking ahead, MacDonald shared some of the upcoming events that CBSRH is planning. These events are designed not only to attract new healthcare professionals but also to strengthen ties within the community and ensure that current practitioners feel valued and supported. "We have several community engagement initiatives in the pipeline, including meet-and-greet events, open houses, and informational sessions," she said. "These events are a crucial part of our strategy to create a welcoming environment for health care professionals and to show them that this is a community that cares deeply about their well-being."
As the interview concluded, MacDonald reflected on the progress CBSRH has made and the challenges that lie ahead. "We’ve come a long way since 2020, but there is still much work to be done," she said. "Our ultimate goal is to ensure that everyone in the Strait of Canso region has access to high-quality health care, and that starts with making this a place where health care professionals want to be."
