I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Royce Shook, the President of the Wilson Seniors Center Advisory Board. Royce is a dedicated leader who plays a key role in organizing a wide range of activities for seniors at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre. The advisory board works closely with the city to ensure that seniors have access to enriching events, whether it’s participating in drop-in classes, attending outdoor excursions like trips to the Maritime Museum, or enjoying other social activities.

The Wilson Seniors Center is a vibrant community hub with over 1,100 members. Royce and his team are committed to creating a welcoming environment where seniors can stay active, engaged, and informed. Throughout the year, the center hosts numerous events designed to cater to a variety of interests. One of the highlights is the "Tuesday Talks" series, where guest speakers are invited to discuss important topics such as bear awareness and elder abuse, among others.

Royce emphasized the importance of these programs in fostering a strong sense of community among seniors, ensuring they remain connected and supported. The board’s efforts help to enhance the quality of life for seniors in Port Coquitlam, offering them opportunities to learn, socialize, and explore new experiences.

Through his leadership, Royce Shook continues to make a positive impact on the lives of many seniors, ensuring that the Wilson Seniors Center remains a vital and active part of the community. 

The Wilson Centre Seniors’ Advisory Association, was formed to promote and develop the well-being of senior citizens in the community of Port Coquitlam by advocating, promoting and fund-raising, and by advising the City of the direction for programs for seniors. In addition to being advocates for programming and reducing social isolation for seniors, the Board raises funds that go back to the seniors’ community through Port Coquitlam Farmers’ Market Coupons, Christmas hampers and other community initiatives and social events.
