Halifax Mayoral Race: MP Andy Fillmore Outlines Vision for the Future
In a special edition of *Community Update*, our show hosts welcomed MP Andy Fillmore, who is now running for Mayor of Halifax. Fillmore, a long-time advocate for urban development and infrastructure, shared his comprehensive plans to address the city's most pressing issues, including housing affordability, economic development, and community inclusivity. With a strong background in urban planning and a decade-long career in politics, Fillmore is positioning himself as a candidate who understands the complexities of Halifax’s challenges and is ready to offer actionable solutions.
Fillmore, who has served as Halifax's MP for nine years, emphasized his unwavering commitment to tackling the city’s housing crisis, which has escalated in recent years. “We need to accelerate the construction of affordable housing and address the root causes of homelessness,” he stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation. His plan includes removing bureaucratic barriers to development, such as outdated building codes and restrictive bylaws, which he argues are stifling growth. Additionally, Fillmore advocates for increasing the intake of tradespeople to meet the growing demand for housing, recognizing that a skilled workforce is crucial to expediting construction projects and ensuring they are completed on time.
On the topic of inclusivity, Fillmore expressed his deep commitment to ensuring that all communities, particularly marginalized groups such as African Nova Scotians and immigrants, have a voice in city decisions. “Effective public service means listening to the community and incorporating their feedback into policy-making,” he said. To this end, Fillmore plans to enhance the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, aiming to better represent the city’s diverse population in municipal decisions. He believes that by actively engaging these communities, the city can create policies that truly reflect the needs and aspirations of all its residents.
Addressing another critical issue, transportation, Fillmore highlighted the pressing need for improved transit services in Halifax. “Our transit system is under strain, with frequent cancellations and staff shortages,” he noted, pointing out that these problems are affecting the daily lives of countless residents. To address this, Fillmore proposed a freeze on the municipal tax rate for two years, which would allow the city to reallocate funds more efficiently and improve service delivery without placing an additional financial burden on taxpayers.
As the campaign progresses, Fillmore’s platform promises to focus on sustainable solutions and community-driven policies. He envisions a Halifax where economic prosperity is coupled with social equity, ensuring that all residents benefit from the city’s growth. With a clear and thoughtful approach, Fillmore aims to foster a more inclusive and prosperous Halifax, one that is prepared to meet the challenges of the future while honouring the diverse voices that make up its community.
