From Immigrant to Political Advocate: A Journey in Canada

Social and political participation in Canada holds special significance as it directly impacts the future of every Canadian. Many immigrants move to Canada due to political issues in their home countries and the lack of access to their social rights. However, many do not realize that voting for their preferred candidate can bring them closer to their ideals for a better life.

An Iranian woman, Sara Eftekhari immigrated to Canada with her family when she was eight. Since her early teenage years, she has been involved in various volunteer jobs. For many years, Sara worked in the healthcare sector in British Columbia and, as a Persian-speaking nurse, listened to the concerns and problems of the Iranian residents of the province.

Sara says, "This job helped me hear people's grievances up close, especially those arising from political or social issues. But at this stage, I decided to participate in political arenas and be an agent of change in the community."

Sara notes that in the past, women had to pay for contraceptive pills, but with the help of the Access BC organization, she took action for a free contraception service program. Now, women do not have to pay for these services with a doctor's prescription.

In this interview, Sara discusses the importance of people's participation in their destinies. She announced that she plans to run in the provincial elections in October 2024 to have a greater role in social activities and political arenas.

Sara calls on Iranians who do not take the issue of elections seriously to have a better and greater presence for the sake of their own and their children's future.
