Strait Talk Episode 6

In Episode 6 of Strait Talk, produced by Civic Journalist Jake Boudrot, host Becky Bourinot speaks with Cape Breton-Canso MP Mike Kelloway about a variety of topics, ranging from local issues to broader political matters affecting the region.

Kelloway, who is also parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, talked about some of his accomplishments over the past year and said he has several announcements coming up. He highlighted the importance of staying connected with constituents and addressing their concerns through tangible actions and policy measures.

Kelloway discussed the federal budget and how some of the measures would help people in the riding, such as funding for small craft harbours to mitigate the effects of climate change. “We have so many harbours that so many communities rely on,” the MP said. He emphasized that these investments are crucial for supporting local economies and protecting the environment.

Kelloway said he has been working on getting more federal funding for affordable housing in his riding. He noted that affordable housing is a critical issue that affects many residents, and securing additional funding would help alleviate some of the housing challenges faced by the community.

While campaigning in the riding in 2019 and 2021, Kelloway said one of the big topics was funding for health care, which he said, his government has delivered on. He also pointed to issues like affordability and Pharmacare and how those are significant to residents of the riding. Kelloway stressed the importance of continuing to advocate for these issues to ensure that all residents have access to necessary services and support.

Kelloway saved his most pointed remarks for the Official Opposition Conservative Party as he criticized Nova Scotian MPs who voted against Bill C-49, which would expand the mandate of the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board to regulate offshore renewables like wind energy. “All but one party is against this, I think, in Ottawa,” he said. “This is wrong.” He argued that supporting renewable energy initiatives is essential for the future of the region and the country as a whole.

Throughout the interview, Kelloway's commitment to his constituents and his dedication to addressing their needs were evident. His focus on key issues like climate change, affordable housing, health care, and renewable energy highlights his proactive approach to governance and his efforts to make a positive impact in his riding.
