The Halifax business community is making strides with progressive ideologies, particularly when it comes to empowering women.  Among these trailblazers, Black women in leadership positions stand out, driving significant change. At the forefront of this movement is Ann Divine, the CEO of Ashanti Leadership. With roots in Guyana, a transformative journey through London, UK, and a firm establishment in Nova Scotia, Divine exemplifies tenacity, resilience, and purpose.

As the chair of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Divine tirelessly champions diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her advocacy focuses on the advancement of businesswomen of colour, making her a pivotal figure in Halifax's business ecosystem. Divine's leadership journey began in Guyana, continued through her education and early career in the UK, and ultimately brought her to Halifax in 2004.

In Halifax, Divine faced challenges as her UK credentials were initially unrecognized. However, she persevered, starting her Canadian career in lower positions before becoming the manager for race relations, equity, and inclusion at the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. This role was instrumental in shaping her career and advocacy work.

Divine's commitment to inclusivity led her to establish Ashanti Leadership, a consultancy focused on leadership development, diversity, and inclusion. Her work with Ashanti Leadership supports organizations in creating equitable environments and developing confident leaders.

In 2018, Cynthia Dorrington became the first Black woman to chair the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, paving the way for leaders like Divine. Today, as the chair, Divine continues to break barriers and foster an inclusive business community. Her story is a testament to resilience, dedication, and the transformative power of inclusive leadership in Halifax.
