During a recent Springwater Township Council meeting, a wide range of topics were brought forward for council deliberation. The agenda included by-law amendments, environmental updates on Orr Lake, and proposals for community and medical hubs.

The council heard a presentation from the Severn Sound Environmental Association (SSEA) about their various projects aimed at monitoring the health of Orr Lake and the surrounding watershed. The SSEA provided an update on additional funding they have received to facilitate a shoreline naturalization project called Restore the Shore, a program designed to "empower residents to naturalize the shores of Severn Sound and local inland lakes."

Council members praised the presentation from SSEA. Councilor Garwood remarked, “Looking at all the graphs and charts and lines doesn’t make a lot of sense to me sometimes, but I am happy that we have partners like yourself and your staff that can help guide this council.”

However, the council also expressed concerns about the slow progress of the Community Hub project, which includes an aquatics centre, library, and gymnasium. Issues concerning the budget and the hiring of a single project management firm for the project remain unresolved after Weston Consulting was instructed to return with answers to the council in January 2024.

“Enthusiasm for the project has turned into frustration,” said Councilor Fischer, noting that his constituents have questions about the cost of the project.

The Community Hub project has been ongoing since the municipality purchased the 20-hectare (50-acre) plot of land on the northwest corner of Bayfield Street and Snow Valley Road in 2020.
