On Monday, July 1, 2024, the 157th anniversary of Canada's birth was celebrated at Town Centre Park in Coquitlam. The event was hosted by the Mayor of Coquitlam, city council representatives, and other government officials near Lafarge Lake. People from various cultural backgrounds attended the park and enjoyed a variety of programs in warm and pleasant weather.

During the celebration, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, Ron McKinnon - Member of Parliament, and MP Fin Donnelly delivered speeches. All speakers acknowledged the Indigenous peoples of Canada, who have been the original inhabitants of this land for centuries and emphasized the cultural richness that comes from different ethnic groups living together in harmony.

In our interview with the Mayor of Coquitlam and a city council member, we highlighted the importance of the media's role in smaller communities. They expressed their appreciation for local journalism, noting how it brings attention to community events and issues that might otherwise be overlooked. The Mayor underscored how local media plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community and keeping residents informed about local government actions and initiatives.

The event featured various booths representing different businesses and organizations. One of the notable participants was Ali Haeri from the Society, who spoke about their mission to deliver food to low-income and needy individuals. He expressed his happiness that Canada Day in Coquitlam provided an opportunity for them to introduce their charity to others and raise awareness about their cause. Haeri mentioned how the exposure would help them reach more volunteers and donors, thereby enhancing their capacity to support the community.

In addition to the speeches and booths, the celebration included cultural performances, family-friendly activities, and food vendors offering a taste of different cuisines. The atmosphere was vibrant, with live music and dancing adding to the festive spirit. Children enjoyed face painting and games, while adults mingled and learned about the diverse organizations contributing to the community’s well-being.
