Building Our City: Urban Development and Community Growth

In a recent interview at City Hall in Coquitlam, Matt Djonlic, City Councillor for the City of Coquitlam, shared his vision for the city and discussed city initiatives. Today's interview focused on the latest developments in the city and addressed the crucial issue of affordable housing. As Coquitlam navigates rapid growth and urban development, this conversation highlighted the city’s efforts to maintain the quality of life for its residents.

Born in Burnaby Hospital and raised in Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, Matt Djonlic's journey to becoming a city councillor stems from a lifelong passion for his community. Now residing in Coquitlam with his partner Natalie, Matt is committed to enhancing the city for all residents through his dedication to public service.

As a councillor, Matt leads key projects improving infrastructure, economy, and quality of life. A major focus is expanding public transit to ease congestion and support population growth in Coquitlam.

“We’re working on expanding our public transit to make it more accessible and efficient,” Matt explains. “This is crucial for supporting our residents’ mobility and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Sherry asks about community engagement. Matt highlights Coquitlam's use of forums, town halls, surveys, and social media to ensure transparent governance and reflect citizen input in decisions.

Affordable housing is a top priority for Matt. The city incentivizes developers to include affordable units and partners with nonprofits for housing projects. "We're committed to affordability," Matt says. "Updating zoning laws and supporting housing cooperatives ensures long-term affordability. Matt also addresses homelessness, focusing on expanding shelters and services to support those in need and help them find stable housing.

When it comes to affordable housing for seniors, Matt emphasizes the city's focus, stating they're developing projects tailored to seniors' needs for safe and affordable living.

Significant residential and commercial development projects are also in the pipeline, aimed at providing a range of housing options and boosting the local economy. These projects are designed to cater to the growing needs of the community while ensuring sustainable growth.

“Our goal is to create developments that benefit everyone in Coquitlam,” Matt notes. “We want to bring new businesses and jobs to the area while maintaining our commitment to sustainability.”

Environmental sustainability is a key priority for the city, with initiatives aimed at increasing green space, implementing stringent recycling programs, and investing in renewable energy sources.

We’re focused on making Coquitlam a more environmentally friendly city,” Matt states. “Expanding our network of bike lanes and promoting public transportation is part of our strategy to reduce our carbon footprint.

The city promotes economic growth by offering tax incentives, streamlining permits, and establishing business-friendly zones. It also supports startups and small businesses through city programs and partnerships with local organizations to create jobs and foster a thriving economic environment, according to Matt.

Public services such as transportation, healthcare, and education are also seeing improvements. The city is expanding its public transportation network, advocating for better healthcare facilities, and investing in educational infrastructure.

We’re committed to enhancing public services to meet the needs of our growing population,” Matt affirms. “Our goal is to provide top-notch resources for our schools, libraries, and healthcare facilities.

Looking ahead, Matt envisions a sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant community.

The council plans to balance growth with maintaining the quality of life by ensuring new developments are thoughtfully planned and preserving green spaces.

“Our long-term vision is to create a community where everyone can thrive,” Matt concludes. “By investing in community services and infrastructure, we aim to enhance the well-being of all our residents.”

Sherry concluded by acknowledging Matt’s steadfast dedication to Coquitlam’s prosperity and urged residents to actively engage in civic matters, underscoring the pivotal role of community participation in shaping the city’s future success.
