St. Stephen's Council Tackles Waste Disposal, Emergency Planning, and Infrastructure Projects
The Municipal District of St. Stephen's recent Committee of the Whole meeting provided significant updates and engaged in key discussions on various community initiatives and development projects. Chaired by Deputy Mayor Ghislaine Wheaton, the meeting began with the acknowledgment of the ancestral territory and the approval of the agenda.
Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Renaud provided a strategic initiative update on the Sharpe's Disposal Program, aimed at safely disposing of used needles. "We had talked about bringing a program brief to this meeting," Renaud explained. He detailed ongoing efforts to secure funding and establish a disposal plan, noting, "We haven't given up on the conversation, but the answers we were hoping for didn't come to fruition as quickly as we had hoped."
The Community Emergency Plan Bylaw was another critical topic. "This is the first early attempt at a new bylaw for the urgent emergency plan. We've got some work to do," Renaud stated. He emphasized the importance of developing a robust emergency response framework in collaboration with the fire department and Deputy CAO Sean Morton.
The discussion then shifted to the Mining Exploration Municipal Consent Process. Renaud addressed the application procedures, stressing the importance of legislative compliance and the proper use of the term "consent." He outlined the municipal responsibilities in overseeing exploration activities and ensuring alignment with provincial regulations.
Updates on the sidewalk renewal program were also provided. "We would like the committee to consider making a recommendation to council to move some of the money earmarked for roads into the sidewalk program," Renaud said, emphasizing the need for improved sidewalks, especially along King Street, for citizen safety and convenience.
The Environmental Trust Fund application for cleanup work at Hanson Cove was discussed, with Councillor David Hyslop expressing cautious optimism. "I think it's great to apply for the funding and see where it goes,"
Plans for the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) were outlined, with Renaud proposing a working group to develop a long-term strategy in collaboration with partners like the BIA and the chamber. "My goal would be a recommendation coming from a working group in September or October when we're in the midst of our budget discussions," he stated, reflecting the collaborative efforts to enhance local tourism infrastructure.
