Fourteen Million Dollar Community Center Opens its Doors in NewWest
The community side of Temesewtx, the new Aquatic and Community Center in New Westminster had a busy day on Monday, April 29th. Its soft opening saw crowds gathering to see just what those fourteen million dollars of tax money had bought for them. The city had been without a community center or pool for four years and they had gotten used to crowding the missing yoga classes and swim instruction into other facilities when they could.
It's not surprising that there has been a steady stream of curious and excited residents all day to see what they could now access once again. Although the pool will not be opening until May 14th there was plenty to see on the drier side of the building.
A conversation with Corrine Garrett, New Westminster's Senior Manager of Recreation Services and Facilities, revealed the planning that went into this community building. From the beginning, the concept was to make the entire facility as inclusive and accessible as possible. It starts with the universal change rooms and washroom facilities. In addition, there is a wheelchair-accessible leisure pool and workout rooms. Designed to be open to all ages and abilities, the community center will have childcare facilities run by the local YMCA, senior activities in the multi-purpose rooms and more drop-in times for basketball, volleyball and pickleball at its two new gyms.
Opening Day saw constant use of the fitness center, complete with a wide array of weights and machines. Residents were lining up to sign up for the range of fitness classes on offer in several multi-purpose rooms. Swim classes, set to start in May when the pool opens, were already full. As more instructors are hired, they are assured that more classes will open up. In the meantime, the soft opening gives everyone a chance to see what is available.
Mayor Patrick Johnstone, on hand for opening ceremonies, stated "I encourage all members of our community to come and visit this incredible facility, which will undoubtedly become a cornerstone of our city for generations to come."
