Hady Anne discusses Status for All
Hady Anne, the spokesperson for Solidarity Across Borders (SAB) joins us to discuss a march SAB is hosting from July 18 to July 25 where they will be walking from Montreal to Ottawa to demand status for all. He joined Local 514 host and video journalist Savanna Craig on Facebook live to discuss the inequalities people without status face and how the pandemic has highlighted the injustices and experiences of undocumented people.
Earlier this month the Canadian federal government announced introduced a new pathway to permanent residency for up to 90,000 undocumented people in Canada. There are approximately 50,000 non-status people in Montreal who are often working jobs that are underpaid, in comparison to their colleagues with status, threatened with deportation, living paycheque-to-paycheque and do not have status to receive the same support Canadians do when experiencing COVID-19.
Anne describes how status for all will provide everyone with rights, and they will no longer experience things, such as under the table unfair pay while contributing to Canada's economy. He said this march is to hold the Canadian government accountable in following through with their promise of providing residency to approximately 90,000 people without status.
Anne also discusses the organizing that has gone into this march, how it will be carried out, what other groups outside of SAB that are involved in this march, and what their plan will be once they reach Ottawa.
