The exhibition brought together a diverse group of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists, each using their craft to explore what Truth and Reconciliation means to them — personally, culturally, and collectively.</p> <p>The walls of the museum were filled with colour, symbolism, and emotion — a visual conversation between history and healing. Each piece told its own story, inviting visitors to reflect on Canada’s colonial past and the ongoing journey toward understanding and repair.</p> <p>“We were never taught about this stuff growing up,” says Métis artist <strong>Fern Burntwood</strong>, pausing in front of her work. “It’s important to recognize what they did to our children and women.”</p> <p>Her words echo a common theme among the artists — the need for visibility, remembrance, and truth-telling. Through their art, they confront painful histories while also celebrating Indigenous strength, identity, and survival.</p> <p>That is exactly what Belcourt hopes this exhibit will continue to inspire: art as a bridge between communities, a way to spark dialogue and compassion.</p> <p>Métis artist <strong>Patti Belanger</strong> contributes vibrant paintings inspired by the landscapes of Georgian Bay, where she grew up. Her work is a blend of memory, emotion, and ancestral connection — the blues and greens of the shoreline mingling with the quiet resilience of her people.</p> <p>“My art is a reflection of how I feel about the place that I live, my ancestors, and creating beauty,” says Belanger. “It’s a way of honouring where I come from and who came before me.”</p> <p>Although many of the artists expressed hope and healing through their creations, <strong>Mitch Case</strong>, PCMNO Representative for MNO Region 4, reminded attendees that the work of reconciliation is far from complete.</p> <p>“Out of the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, fewer than 15 have been implemented,” Case noted, underscoring the gap between promises and progress.</p> <p>His words grounded the event in reality — a reminder that reconciliation requires more than art, words, or good intentions. It demands action, accountability, and sustained effort from every level of society.</p> <p>Still, for those who walked through the exhibit, there was a palpable sense of hope — that through creativity and community, change can take root. <em>Reconciliation Through Art</em> stands as both a tribute to Indigenous resilience and a call for continued awareness, learning, and empathy.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Simcoe Community Media</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/64" hreflang="en">Simcoe County</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/63" hreflang="en">Cultural Development</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/61" hreflang="en">Human Rights</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/26" hreflang="en">Indigenous</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; Money from the Infrastructure Reserve was allocated to replace the aging boiler at the Public Works Garage—an investment meant to ensure efficient heating and continued functionality through the colder months. Additional funds from the same reserve were approved for critical roof repairs at the Municipal Complex, where long-term wear and leaks had become a growing concern. Councillors noted that while such expenditures can strain reserves, addressing these repairs now will help prevent larger costs in the future.</p> <p>Economic Development Officer (EDO) Jamie Spadoni followed with an upbeat report highlighting significant achievements and momentum within Schreiber’s tourism and development efforts. Spadoni announced that the Discovery Center and Museum had experienced a record-breaking year, welcoming 4,222 visitors as of September 17. This figure represents one of the strongest tourism turnouts in recent memory. Guests travelled from far and wide—spanning 27 countries and 41 U.S. states—demonstrating the reach and growing reputation of the local attraction.</p> <p>Spadoni added that the EDO office is actively working on several proposals with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and is already coordinating long-term planning efforts with the Township of Terrace Bay for 2026. These joint initiatives are expected to focus on tourism promotion, regional marketing, and shared infrastructure investments. The EDO also reported a growing sense of local engagement, noting the formal appointment of resident Bob Bryson as a new member of the Community Economic Development Committee. His addition was described as a welcome step toward strengthening volunteer participation and community input in local decision-making.</p> <p>Operationally, Schreiber is in the process of transitioning into winter mode. The splash pad has been closed for the season, and crews have begun winterizing the baseball field to prevent damage from freezing temperatures. However, as preparations for winter advance, another seasonal issue has emerged—bears.</p> <p>Council discussed an unusual increase in bear activity across Schreiber and other northern municipalities this year. Many officials and residents have attributed the uptick to a poor berry season, which has forced bears to search for alternative food sources closer to populated areas. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has updated its regulations, now requiring a license for bear trapping. In response, council reminded residents to report all nuisance bear encounters directly to the provincial “Bear Wise” program. Officials emphasized that these reports help ensure the town’s bear issues are formally logged and addressed through the proper channels.</p> <p>Attention then turned to infrastructure compliance. A recent inspection report of Schreiber’s Wastewater Treatment Plant identified six non-compliance findings. Most of these were tied to the prior operational practice of running only one clarifier rather than the full system. The report recommended corrective measures to improve efficiency and meet provincial standards. Council was advised that if the town’s pending grant application for a new treatment facility is unsuccessful, the municipality will need to include the necessary upgrades in its next capital budget to avoid further penalties.</p> <p>In an effort to reduce expenses and better manage staff hours, council voted to close the arena on Sundays for public skating and shinny sessions. The facility will, however, remain open for regular programming and recreational use on Saturdays. Despite the schedule change, council supported extending the overall arena season until April 12, 2026, allowing the Schreiber Figure Skating Club to hold its annual ice show and other community events without interruption.</p> <p>The Fire Department also made the agenda, with plans to strengthen its operational capacity. Council endorsed the department’s intent to apply for a second Fire Protection Grant aimed at acquiring new equipment and essential safety supplies. Officials said the funding, if approved, would further enhance local emergency response capabilities.</p> <p>As the meeting drew to a close, council approved overtime pay for recreation staff scheduled to raise the Truth and Reconciliation flag on Monday, September 30—the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The flag-raising ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. outside the Municipal Complex, serving as a gesture of respect and reflection for the community.</p> <p>The meeting underscored the range of priorities facing Schreiber’s municipal government—from managing budgets and maintaining infrastructure to fostering tourism and community engagement. As fall gives way to winter, council members expressed optimism that the groundwork being laid now will help ensure the town continues to grow sustainably while meeting the practical needs of its residents.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Schreiber Community Media</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/46" hreflang="en">Schreiber</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">Politics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; In Barrie, the Barrie Native Friendship Centre commemorated the day by organizing a walk at the Spirit Catcher near Lake Simcoe, bringing community members together to honour survivors and remember the children who never returned home from residential schools.</p> <p>Josie Fiegehen, Cultural Resource Coordinator at the Barrie Native Friendship Centre, spoke with <em>Simcoe Community Media</em> about the importance of ensuring reconciliation efforts extend beyond a single day of recognition. She emphasized that true reconciliation requires sustained action and accountability from all Canadians.</p> <p>Fiegehen urged non-Indigenous Canadians to read and respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, noting with concern that only nine have been fully implemented since the report’s release in 2015.</p> <p>“It’s not just one day of the year that we acknowledge this truth,” she said. “You can wear your orange shirt any day of the year. In fact, I encourage it — take this truth outside of this one day, because this is the way we live. This is our truth, and we live it every day.”</p> <p>Meanwhile, residents in Oro-Medonte continue to voice opposition to the City of Barrie’s proposed annexation plans. On September 29, 2025, the City formally launched the public phase of its annexation process with a statutory public meeting held in accordance with the <em>Municipal Act.</em> The session marked the start of community consultation on the proposed boundary restructuring, which involves lands in the Township of Oro-Medonte, Township of Springwater, and the County of Simcoe.</p> <p>The proposal would see approximately 870 hectares (2,150 acres) of land added to the City of Barrie to support projected employment and population growth through 2051 and beyond. While the plan has backing from developers and some landowners, it has also drawn strong opposition from rural residents, environmental groups, and Indigenous advocates who have raised concerns about the loss of farmland, ecological impact, and insufficient consultation.</p> <p>Jane Voorheis, a representative of the advocacy group Friends of the Future, has been a leading voice against the annexation. In a recent interview with <em>Simcoe Community Media,</em> she reaffirmed the group’s commitment to protecting local land and community character.</p> <p>Neil Swanson, an Indigenous community member, spoke about the importance of environmental stewardship in the discussion. “We’re stewards of the land, so we’ve got to make sure that our impact is less,” he said.</p> <p>The final decision on the annexation will ultimately rest with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Before the matter reaches the province, however, the framework agreement must first receive formal approval from all affected municipalities.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Simcoe Community Media</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/64" hreflang="en">Simcoe County</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">Politics</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/24" hreflang="en">Environment</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/25" hreflang="en">Infrastructure</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/26" hreflang="en">Indigenous</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/67" hreflang="en">Meetings</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; Politics</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/2" hreflang="en">Non Profits &amp; Activism</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-zone field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">Ontario</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-upload-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field--item"><time datetime="2025-10-02T12:00:00Z">Thu, 10/02/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <section id="node-media-field-comment--2"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=10078&amp;2=field_comment&amp;3=comment" token="pmMo0yQqxR60hmV9PQyCWGbSNLc9M2ujAkqI78rHN4A"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-story-summary field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Story Summary (80 - 120 Characters)</div> <div class="field--item">&quot;It&#039;s Not Just One Day of the Year that we Acknowledge this ruth. The pilot youth training program provided not only technical skills but also a voice and platform for participants to share their perspectives.</p> <p>For many, it was their first experience behind a camera or editing footage. They learned to craft stories, conduct interviews, and write like journalists. Sessions were led by mentors: NACTV staff shared expertise in video production, Don Walmsley guided students in interviewing, and writers from the <em>Neepawa Banner</em> introduced the basics of article writing.</p> <p>Support from the community made the program possible. The Beautiful Plains Community Foundation funded cameras, microphones, and facilitator honoraria. The Neepawa Settlement provided a welcoming space, snacks, and encouragement to ensure every participant felt supported.</p> <p>By the end, 12 of the 15 youth completed the program. Many asked if it would return next year and expressed interest in volunteering with NACTV in the meantime.</p> <p>The program not only taught media skills but also empowered youth to share their own stories. The Neepawa community can be proud of this achievement and excited about what’s possible when we continue investing in local youth.</p> </div> <section id="node-blog-field-comment"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=10036&amp;2=field_comment&amp;3=comment" token="sQ7_tc48aSxkmgo-nByldzlvot504_VRYFcpgPMeToc"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> Tue, 30 Sep 2025 01:40:08 +0000 KimSchreiber 10036 at https://www.live.commediaportal.ca Regent Park Town Hall: Councillor Chris Moise Updates Residents on Key Issues https://www.live.commediaportal.ca/index.php/en/media/regent-park-town-hall-councillor-chris-moise-updates-residents-key-issues <span>Regent Park Town Hall: Councillor Chris Moise Updates Residents on Key Issues</span> <span><span lang="" about="/index.php/en/user/172" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">apathot</span></span> <span>Mon, 09/29/2025 - 16:27</span> <div class="field field--name-field-video field--type-video-embed-field field--label-hidden field--item"><div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video form-group"><iframe width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oyvVoqsCtWE?autoplay=1&amp;start=0&amp;rel=0"></iframe> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field__full-story field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Residents filled the Regent Park Community Centre on 10th September for a town hall hosted by Ward 13 Councillor Chris Moise and his staff. The meeting gave the community an opportunity to hear updates on city priorities while raising concerns on issues ranging from housing and safety to recreation access.</p> <p><em>Dawar Naeem - Local Journalism Initiative</em></p> <p>Councillor Moise highlighted the City’s updated approach to homelessness and encampments. The protocol, he explained, emphasizes engaging individuals, connecting them with supports, and offering pathways into housing before removing unoccupied structures. Moise pointed to recent successes in moving people into shelter and housing, while stressing the need for compassion and consistency.</p> <p>Community safety was another top concern. Moise detailed quarterly meetings with Neighbourhood Community Officers and monthly Community Safety Network sessions, designed to keep communication open between residents and police. He also introduced improvements under the Downtown East Action Plan Reset, which increased daily park and sidewalk cleaning, expanded laneway maintenance, and added 24-hour biohazard waste response.</p> <p>To address concerns about dangerous intersections, Moise announced recent and upcoming pedestrian safety upgrades. Crosswalks and signals are now in place at Yonge &amp; Maitland, Queen &amp; Sackville, and Homewood &amp; Carlton, with new measures planned for Parliament and Dundas, Richmond and Power, and other high-traffic areas.</p> <p>The Councillor also reported progress on local access to recreation. At the Pam McConnell Aquatic Centre, participation by local residents grew from 39% in 2024 to 75% in 2025. Use of the Regent Park Community Centre and athletic grounds rose from 18% to 61%, thanks to early registration policies prioritizing neighbourhood residents.</p> <p>Moise’s staff closed the meeting with the latest data from Toronto Police’s 51 Division. Major crime is down nearly 11% compared to last year, with significant decreases in robberies, auto theft, and shootings. Regent Park recorded a 3.8% decline overall.</p> <p>During the open mic, residents raised questions about affordable housing, transparency at City Hall, and the need for closer collaboration with grassroots organizations.</p> <p>The town hall underscored both the challenges and progress in Regent Park, while reaffirming that community voices remain central to shaping the neighbourhood’s future.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/47" hreflang="en">Regent Park (TO)</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">Politics</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/25" hreflang="en">Infrastructure</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/61" hreflang="en">Human Rights</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; Families enjoyed children’s games, bingo, and face painting, while the main stage showcased live music and cultural performances reflecting Regent Park’s diversity.</p> <p>Local vendors and community organizations set up booths throughout the park, offering resources and services to residents. From housing and job opportunities to healthcare support and other civic issues, groups were on hand to connect with neighbours and provide help where it was needed most. A highlight of the day was the free community BBQ, where volunteers served food to long lines of neighbours, underscoring the event’s role as both a summer festival and a unifying gathering for the community.</p> <p>The celebration also drew the attention of elected officials. Kristyn Wong-Tam, MPP for Toronto Centre, joined the festivities, taking time to speak with residents about community priorities. Evan Solomon, MP for Toronto Centre and Canada’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation as well as Minister responsible for Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario , also attended, engaging with Regent Parkers and emphasizing the importance of grassroots events in building strong neighbourhoods.</p> <p>For more than three decades, Sunday in the Park has been a place to celebrate resilience, diversity, and community pride.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/47" hreflang="en">Regent Park (TO)</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/63" hreflang="en">Cultural Development</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/25" hreflang="en">Infrastructure</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; While the first part of the event focused on home safety, the second part shifted attention to financial and estate planning.</p> <p>The next presenter at the Annual Seniors Fair was Cody Atkinson, a wealth management professional from Investors Group. Cody delivered an engaging and informative talk to a group of seniors on the vital, yet often overlooked, topic of estate planning. His central message was clear: without proper planning, the government (CRA) could quickly become the primary beneficiary of one’s estate. His ultimate goal was to help seniors minimize taxes and ensure their wealth passed to the people they cared about most.</p> <p>Cody encouraged audience participation, inviting questions at any time, and guided attendees through common pitfalls using vivid examples. He highlighted challenges for blended families, where a lack of planning can unintentionally exclude children from a former marriage, as accounts and beneficiary designations often roll directly to a new spouse. He emphasized the importance of regularly reviewing Wills and beneficiary forms to avoid complications.</p> <p>A significant portion of the presentation focused on dividing physical assets, such as a family camp. Cody explained that property with large capital gains could trigger an unexpected and substantial tax bill that the estate might not have the cash to cover, potentially forcing a sale or mortgage. He suggested permanent life insurance as a cost-effective solution to cover these tax liabilities or to equalize the estate among heirs.</p> <p>Finally, Cody covered essential legal tools, including the creation of a professional Will to designate an Executor and Guardian, and the critical use of Powers of Attorney for both property and health matters. He also cautioned against selecting an Executor or Power of Attorney who lives out of province, noting the complex legal requirements and potential bond fees that could arise.</p> <p>Through practical advice, real-world examples, and an interactive approach, Cody’s presentation provided seniors with the knowledge and tools they need to protect their assets and ensure their wishes are carried out.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Schreiber Community Media</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/46" hreflang="en">Schreiber</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/29" hreflang="en">Education</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/6" hreflang="en">Education</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-zone field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">Ontario</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-upload-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field--item"><time datetime="2025-09-28T12:00:00Z">Sun, 09/28/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <section id="node-media-field-comment--2"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=10028&amp;2=field_comment&amp;3=comment" token="Ddy9e4uKbi_Tb1xIzlcgKy9U-NV_F8rgEbOkE2n3Ha8"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-story-summary field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Story Summary (80 - 120 Characters)</div> <div class="field--item">At the Seniors Fair, Residents were Provided with valuable information on estate planning and wealth management.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-mkp field--type-markup field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">mkp</div> <div class="field--item"></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-program field--type-hms field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Total Duration of Civic content. format is hh:mm:ss</div> <div class="field--item"> <span class="hms hms-format-hh-mm-ss"> 00:50:34 </span></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-music-credit field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Music Credit</div> <div class="field--item">RFM Youtube (D. One man, who has lived in Barrie for 17 years and asked to remain anonymous, shared his story. He described the loss of both a child and his father within a short time—tragedies that led to addiction and eventually homelessness. Now in recovery, he has spent the past year trying to rebuild, operating a registered contracting business with his own set of tools.</p> <p>His account challenges Mayor Nuttall’s claim that many encampment residents are from outside the city. With the site being cleared and shelter space already at capacity, he and others now face an uncertain future with no clear housing options provided by either the city or the province. The resident also emphasized that leaving Barrie is not an option for him due to personal commitments, despite the mayor’s stated intention to relocate people out of the community.</p> <p>Meanwhile, Barrie City Council has voted to phase out its Automated Speed Enforcement program by the end of the year. The decision follows Premier Doug Ford’s announcement that the province will end the use of speed cameras, citing misuse by some municipalities and a resulting loss of public trust. Ford argued the program had become more of a cash grab than a road safety tool.</p> <p>While many councillors acknowledged the cameras were effective in slowing traffic near schools, they agreed on the need to align with provincial direction. The city will now consider red light cameras and other traffic-calming strategies to maintain road safety.</p> <p>“This is one tool in the toolbox,” said Mayor Nuttall. “There were traffic calming measures before—safety cameras, photo cameras, radar cameras—and there will be afterwards.”</p> <p>The City of Barrie spent roughly $700,000 to run the Automated Speed Enforcement program, which generated about $1.2 million in revenue. The $500,000 surplus was directed toward road safety improvements.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Simcoe Community Media</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/64" hreflang="en">Simcoe County</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">Politics</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/25" hreflang="en">Infrastructure</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; Politics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-zone field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">Ontario</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-upload-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field--item"><time datetime="2025-09-28T12:00:00Z">Sun, 09/28/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <section id="node-media-field-comment--3"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=10024&amp;2=field_comment&amp;3=comment" token="8URULX2Vn4RATcMevxVX7DuSnLqk34hJqStkbks1M6I"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-story-summary field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Story Summary (80 - 120 Characters)</div> <div class="field--item">Barrie’s Speed Camera Program Cost $700,000 to Run and Brought in $1.2 million, Netting a $500,000 Surplus.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Tags</div> <div class="field--item">Barrie; Speed Cameras; Alex Nuttall; Doug Ford</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-mkp field--type-markup field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">mkp</div> <div class="field--item"></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-program field--type-hms field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Total Duration of Civic content. format is hh:mm:ss</div> <div class="field--item"> <span class="hms hms-format-hh-mm-ss"> 00:55:00 </span></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-initial-air-date field--type-datetime field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Initial Air Date</div> <div class="field--item"><time datetime="2025-09-28T12:00:00Z">Sun, 09/28/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-idea field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Creative control for this story was exercised by:</div> <div class="field--item">The LJI Journalist</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-audience-participation field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Audience Participation</div> <div class="field--item">No</div> </div> Sun, 28 Sep 2025 20:52:12 +0000 DeepakSimcoe 10024 at https://www.live.commediaportal.ca Barrie Housing Brings Community Together for Common Room Reopening https://www.live.commediaportal.ca/index.php/en/media/barrie-housing-brings-community-together-common-room-reopening <span>Barrie Housing Brings Community Together for Common Room Reopening</span> <span><span lang="" about="/index.php/en/user/561" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">DeepakSimcoe</span></span> <span>Fri, 09/26/2025 - 18:39</span> <div class="field field--name-field-video field--type-video-embed-field field--label-hidden field--item"><div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video form-group"><iframe width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/i6lEkfhyt1A?autoplay=1&amp;start=0&amp;rel=0"></iframe> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field__full-story field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>During the ongoing housing crisis in the City of Barrie, nonprofits like Barrie Housing continue to provide critical support and a sense of stability for residents in need of affordable options. Barrie Housing not only offers geared-to-income housing but also works to create a stronger sense of belonging and community for the people who live there.</p> <p>Recently, after a series of renovations, Barrie Housing proudly reopened the common room area at its Mill Creek location. The updated space was welcomed with celebration, as community partners such as Youth Call and Kidz Club gathered to mark the occasion. For many residents and service providers, the reopening symbolized much more than a refreshed room — it represented renewed opportunities for connection, collaboration, and support.</p> <p>Kidz Club Founder, Maddie Neuman, expressed her excitement about the space being made available again. Her organization has long relied on the common room for after-school programming and activities that bring children together in a safe and welcoming environment. “Isolation happens really easily, especially around the holiday time, so having these spaces for people who can gather really makes all the difference,” Neuman shared.</p> <p>Neuman’s passion for this work is rooted in her own experiences. “Growing up in housing, I wanted to create a program where people could feel part of a community,” she explained. Since founding Kidz Club in 2010, she has grown the initiative to reach children in nine different Barrie Housing complexes, offering them opportunities to learn, play, and build friendships. Her commitment demonstrates how grassroots programs can transform everyday spaces into hubs of encouragement and belonging.</p> <p>For Neuman and other nonprofit leaders at the reopening, the renovated common room represents new possibilities. With more welcoming and functional facilities, they can continue to expand their programming, strengthen connections between neighbours, and help combat the isolation many families face. Together, these organizations hope the revitalized space will act as a cornerstone for community life, supporting residents of all ages and reinforcing the message that affordable housing can be more than shelter — it can be a place to truly belong.</p> <p> </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Simcoe Community Media</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/64" hreflang="en">Simcoe County</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">Politics</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/63" hreflang="en">Cultural Development</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/25" hreflang="en">Infrastructure</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; The legacy of residential schools and child welfare policies continues to leave trauma, displacement, and barriers to culturally safe supports. In Regent Park and across downtown east Toronto, many families live with these challenges every day.</p> <p><em>Fred Alvarado - Local Journalism Initiative</em></p> <p>Native Child and Family Services of Toronto is one agency responding to these challenges. Founded in the 1980s by First Nations and Métis leaders, it is child-centered, family-focused, and community-driven. Its programs are rooted in culture, respect, and grounded in self-determination.</p> <p>At their recent open house, families gathered at 30 College Street and 185 Carlton Street to explore services, enjoy Indian tacos, and visit the Mooka’am art show, themed Strength in Our Ancestors. Senior clinician Adrian Cocking explained how art has become a pathway to reclaim identity and healing, while Charlene Avalos, with Native Child since 1989, reflected on how Indigenous worldviews continue to shape their work.</p> <p>Transitional Housing supervisor Randy Budd highlighted advocacy services that help families secure stable housing and community supports. Natalia, from the holistic team, described guiding families through complex challenges — from mental health support to specialized programs for survivors of human trafficking and at-risk youth under 18.</p> <p>At the CAMH Pow Wow, Brianna Rushlow, supervisor of Aboriginal Head Start, spoke about programs that connect children and parents through culture, language, and land-based learning, fostering pride, confidence, and resilience.</p> <p>For Regent Park, where many Indigenous families and youth live, Native Child’s presence offers not only essential supports but also a foundation of belonging and resilience that continues to uplift young people and families.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre</div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-type field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Video</div> <div class="field field--name-field-community field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/47" hreflang="en">Regent Park (TO)</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-language field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">English</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic-value field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/26" hreflang="en">Indigenous</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/3" hreflang="en">News &amp; Politics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-zone field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/index.php/en/taxonomy/term/14" hreflang="en">Ontario</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-upload-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field--item"><time datetime="2025-09-26T12:00:00Z">Fri, 09/26/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <section id="node-media-field-comment--3"> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=10016&amp;2=field_comment&amp;3=comment" token="81CICvQ44DsYapAPvdqrwDgPetxRjOBYt1nOYpCX_b4"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> <div class="field field--name-field-story-summary field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Story Summary (80 - 120 Characters)</div> <div class="field--item">Indigenous-led programs strengthen families, culture, and resilience across Toronto communities. </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Tags</div> <div class="field--item">#indigenous; #regentpark; #toronto;</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-mkp field--type-markup field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">mkp</div> <div class="field--item"></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-program field--type-hms field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Total Duration of Civic content. format is hh:mm:ss</div> <div class="field--item"> <span class="hms hms-format-hh-mm-ss"> 00:15:42 </span></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-music-credit field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Music Credit</div> <div class="field--item">Intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhNZfs8ezZg Outro 2018-11-15, Doctor_Dreamchip https://freesound.org/s/458086/ and Electric Dreams-Tyrone MacLean-Wilson</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-initial-air-date field--type-datetime field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Initial Air Date</div> <div class="field--item"><time datetime="2025-09-26T12:00:00Z">Fri, 09/26/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-idea field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Creative control for this story was exercised by:</div> <div class="field--item">The LJI Journalist</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-audience-participation field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Audience Participation</div> <div class="field--item">No</div> </div> Fri, 26 Sep 2025 20:57:50 +0000 apathot 10016 at https://www.live.commediaportal.ca
