Young Peoples' Reluctance to Marry Raises Concerns for Winnipeg's Arab Families

Islamic and Arab communities differ from other societies in the matter of marriage. It is seen as the first step towards emotional and social stability for young people.

The Arab and Islamic community in Winnipeg faces significant challenges, and perhaps the most complex of these is the reluctance of young people to marry. Mosques and Arab and Islamic associations in Winnipeg have placed this challenge among their priorities and play a significant role in raising awareness among Muslim youth to seriously consider establishing a family that contributes to their social and emotional stability.

Abdeslam Glioula, family relations consultant, was a guest on Civic Platform and stated that marriage is a challenging decision for everyone. The appropriate decision should be made at the right time when all these elements come together, including financial, physical, emotional, and psychological readiness. "We cannot make the decision to marry if there is a deficiency in any of these elements, as it will affect the stability of the marital relationship."

Glioula also added that today's economic challenges in Winnipeg, along with rising inflation rates and increasing prices, have led to an increase in the reluctance to marry. The fear of failure and divorce is another reason for delayed marriage. In Arab communities, men are responsible for marriage expenses, rent, and providing all household requirements. With the decreasing wage rates in Winnipeg, the step of marriage has become more challenging than ever before.

Marriage has many challenges, which is why collaboration with each other is crucial. It's also a chance to provide appropriate support through community associations and organizations, explaining the meanings of marriage and how to establish a successful family that can face today's challenges with determination, commitment, and love.
