Wild Strawberries

Medicine Picking & Identification with Mark Eshkawkogan in the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Mnidoo Mnising - June 25th, 2020.

In this "strawberry moon" episode, Mark teaches us about wild strawberries, or "de'minun". De'minun literally translates as "heart berry" in English (due to its resemblance to the organ), and is a much loved medicine that makes its appearance in the early summer.  He shows us where to find them, what they are good for (health-wise), and even gives us tips on how to be 'bear-wise', and be conscious of bears as you're out there in the bush harvesting.  He also shares the story of his daughter's "Berry Fast", which is a coming of age ceremony that is held for girls who are maturing into women.  Nahaaw, miigwetch!
