West Vancouver Unveils Keen Lau Fitness Park in Memorial Tribute

West Vancouver residents gathered on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, to witness the official opening of the Keen Lau Fitness Circuit, a new public facility located in Ambleside Park. The park, named in memory of the late Keen Lau, serves as a tribute to his vibrant life and numerous contributions to the community.

The idea to honour Lau with a fitness park stemmed from Mayor Mark Sager's long-standing vision to revitalize the area, a plan that Lau had actively supported before his tragic passing in a drowning accident. Mayor Sager, reflecting on his friendship with Lau and their shared passion for community engagement, expressed his deep satisfaction at seeing the project come to fruition.

The memorialization of Lau and the development of the fitness park were subjects of discussion during a recent West Vancouver council meeting. Councillor Nora Gambioli highlighted the importance of such memorials in the district, citing examples like Rutledge Field and Fred Jopson Field as previous dedications to local figures.

The Keen Lau Fitness Circuit features a range of outdoor fitness equipment, including pull-up and parallel bars, sit-up benches, gymnastic wall bars (Swedish wall), a climbing rope, and more. These facilities are designed not only to promote physical fitness but also to be accessible to individuals using mobility devices, aligning with Lau's inclusive spirit.

Funding for the project was made possible through generous contributions from organizations such as the Ledcor Group, Park Royal, and West Vancouver Foundation, as well as donations from relatives and friends of Keen Lau. Lisa Park, Lau's widow, expressed her gratitude to the council for creating the memorial, emphasizing that it serves as a meaningful way to honour Lau's legacy.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Keen Lau Fitness Circuit was attended by Mayor Sager, council members, community leaders, and residents. Participants were encouraged to wear workout attire as a symbol of celebrating Lau's active lifestyle and dedication to fitness.

The unveiling of the Keen Lau Fitness Park stands as a testament to West Vancouver's commitment to remembering and honouring those who have made lasting impacts on the community, ensuring that their legacies continue to inspire and uplift future generations.
