Strait Talk Episode 3 – A Resident of Madame Island was Honored
Nova Scotians were awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of significant service during the inaugural investiture ceremony at Government House in Halifax on May 6.
The medal recipients represent a broad cross-section of Nova Scotians who have made significant contributions to Canada, the province, or their community.
The medal recipients included Yvon Samson of Petit de Grat, who has been a tireless advocate of Acadian language and culture, and a devoted volunteer in his community.
"For me it has great value. I hope that the young people who are in school right now benefit from something that I did not have, that is to say education in French. They can be proud of their French education. I hope that with time we can reverse the assimilative situation", said Yvon Samson.
The medal program was established by the Government of Canada in May 2023 with the support of The King and is administered by the Chancellery of Honours, on behalf of the Governor General.
Lt-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc, a native of Isle Madame, presented Samson with the honour.
“His Majesty has dedicated his life to the service of people throughout the Commonwealth, championing youth, environmental stewardship, Crown-Indigenous relations and service provided by those in uniform. In this spirit, the Coronation Medal honours those who have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to their professions and the well-being of the province,” said Lt-Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc.
