St. Andrews Drives Growth with New Developments and Community Projects

Key Public Hearings and Development Discussions

The meeting started with public hearings on proposed amendments, which aim to convert an existing barn on Bayview Drive into a retail fishmonger. Concerns over traffic and parking, particularly near the busy Tim Hortons area, were front and center. Council decided to proceed with the first readings of these amendments, committing to explore solutions like no-parking signs to mitigate potential congestion.

Another focal point was the development at the Algonquin Resort, proposed by 742039 New Brunswick Limited. The plans include a Nordic spa and new staff residences, raising community concerns about how these structures will blend with the historic Algonquin Hotel. Council plans to address these objections in a July 2, 2024 hearing, inviting further community feedback and possible design revisions.

Additionally, amendments to 222 Prince of Wales Street were discussed. Lynn and David Mayo seek to replace their garage with a commercial space for the "We Fabric Shop." After a thorough debate, the council agreed to restrict the use of the new building to an art or craft studio with associated retail, alleviating worries about future uses.

Community-Focused Presentations

The meeting featured several important presentations. Reika Nasol presented the Community Food Forest Project, proposing a sustainable green space near the Algonquin Hotel that would serve educational and food security purposes. This initiative received positive feedback, with further council deliberation planned.

Karl Savoie of King Street Pizza requested permission to build an accessibility ramp, which the council supported, emphasizing their commitment to downtown accessibility improvements.

Bylaw Deliberations

Council reviewed a new solid waste bylaw, particularly for large developments like apartments with five or more units. The bylaw faced debate over the financial burden on tenants and the fairness of landlords paying twice for garbage collection. While the second reading was approved, the third reading was tabled for further refinement.
