Schreiber Public Library Holds Workshop on Healthy Living for Seniors

The Schreiber Public Library has long been a vital resource for seniors in the community, offering not only books and digital materials but also programs and services tailored to their needs. Recognizing the significant role the library plays in the lives of older adults, the library recently hosted an engaging and informative session focused on healthy aging.

Library CEO Linda Williamson spearheaded the event, emphasizing the importance of making valuable health information accessible to all. Library Assistant David Costa took charge of the technical setup, collaborating with the Schreiber Media Centre to capture the event for future viewing.

The session featured Montana Sacchetti, the dedicated Public Health Nurse for Schreiber and Terrace Bay, who provided a comprehensive overview of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s (TBDHU) services. She began with a detailed presentation on publicly funded immunizations, covering essential vaccines such as those for COVID-19 and influenza. Sacchetti underscored the critical importance of staying up to date with vaccinations, particularly for seniors, as they are more vulnerable to complications from preventable illnesses.

Beyond immunizations, Sacchetti addressed another major concern for aging populations: the risk of falls and injury prevention. She outlined key strategies to minimize hazards in the home, including maintaining clear pathways between rooms, ensuring adequate lighting, and using assistive devices when necessary. She also highlighted simple yet effective daily habits, such as wearing properly prescribed eyeglasses to aid navigation and reduce the risk of missteps.

A particularly relevant topic for attendees was the rollout of free dental services for seniors. Many had questions about eligibility and how to access these benefits, given some of the confusion surrounding the new program. Sacchetti provided clarity on the initiative, explaining the criteria and process for enrollment, and encouraged participants to seek further guidance from healthcare providers if needed.
