The Record Episode 8
At the committee of the whole session of Richmond Municipal Council on June 10, the first presentation of the evening was from Terry Smith, of Destination Cape Breton, about their 2024-2027 tourism strategy for the island.
Tommy Samson, with the Louisdale Lions Club, made a presentation to council requesting $20,000 for a $1.4 million waterfront project in Louisdale.
Municipal staff provided information on the provincial Share the Road initiative for Off-Highway Vehicles.
The 2021-2022 Municipal Profile and Financial Indicators Report from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing was the next topic for council.
District 5 Councillor Brent Sampson raised concerns about rural mail delivery in his district.
At a special meeting on June 13, Richmond Municipal approved its 2025-2025 budget with no increases in residential or commercial tax rates.
Noting that the budget is just over $17.4 million, the municipality said in a press release issued on June 19 that the budget includes funds for community grants to support local projects, landfill investment to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, and planning for future improvements in cellular coverage.
Council also approved funding for the Department of Public Works to prepare water and sewer systems increasing climate volatility.
More than $5.4 million will go towards costs like policing, education, and valuation services, the municipality said, noting that policing and education expenditures increased by over $365,000 from last year.
The municipality said this was offset by cost savings realized through the revised service exchange agreement with the province and the increase in property values over the last year.
The budget also includes health care funding for physician recruitment, seniors safety and social inclusion, the Cape Breton Regional Cancer Centre, and hospital foundations, the municipality added.
