Philologist Olga Khamedova Tells Her Story of Coming to Winnipeg Allowing Her To Continue Her Research.

Вінніпег завжди був центром української еміграції, саме тому багато українців свідомо хочуть потрапити саме сюди. З початку повномасштабного вторгнення інтерес до цього міста виріс в декілька разів. Так, за останній рік Вінніпег зустрів більше 12 000 українців. За цими показниками його можна назвати одним із лідерів із прийому новачків.

Своєю історію імміграції до Вінніпегу і роботи у наукових проєктах ділиться Ольга Хамедова, яка як і тисячі українців була змушена покинути свою домівку, аби врятувати себе і свою дитину. 

Насамперед Ольга підкреслила, що програма CUAET, яку канадський уряд пропонує українцям, – це просто неймовірна можливість. Завдяки цій можливості жінка змогла отримати візу в найкоротші терміни та відродити надію на щасливе та безпечне майбутнє.

По-друге, Ольга Хамедова розповідає про свій досвід пошуку роботи. Завдяки програмі від Університету Манітоби «Scientists at risk”, жінка має унікальну можливість продовжити свої наукові студії. 

“Ще перед поїздкою я вирішила, що я маю знати якнайбільше про всі культурні інституції українців тут, про різні заходи і максимально брати в усьому участь, що стосується української громади Манітоби. Це було необхідно для мене, щоб відчувати себе потрібною, щоб продовжувати жити тим життям, до якого я звикла, в колі багатьох культурних подій і працюючи для української культури”, розповідає Ольга. 

Зараз жінка працює у архіві українського культурного і освітнього центру «Осередок», оскільки саме там зберігаються унікальні колекції перших українських газет, які видавалися українцями в Манітобі. 

“Я є гендерною дослідницею і мене цікавить діяльність українських журналісток в Канаді. Тому збираю інформацію і про перших журналісток, редакторок, видавчинь українського походження, які працювали в Манітобі”, - додає Ольга. 

Щодо основної діяльності в Університеті Манітоби, то команда Ольги Visiting Scholars з України проводить різноманітні заходи, які знайомлять місцеву спільноту з українською культурою, історією, сучасними реаліями. 

“Розповідати правду про війну, яку веде Росія в Україні, розвінчувати міфи російської пропаганди, - ми всі зараз воїни інформаційного фронту. Так, восени 2022 року команда провела круглий стіл, присвячений війні в Україні”, - зазначає Ольга. 

Winnipeg has always been the centre of Ukrainian emigration, which is why many Ukrainians consciously want to settle here. Since the full-scale invasion, interest in this city has increased by several times. Yes, over the last year, Winnipeg has welcomed more than 12,000 Ukrainians. According to these indicators, it can be called one of the leaders in welcoming Ukrainian newcomers.

Olga Khamedova, like thousands of Ukrainians, was forced to leave her home to save herself and her child.She shares her story of immigrating to Winnipeg and working on scientific projects.

First of all, Olga emphasized that the CUAET program, which the Canadian government offers to Ukrainians, is an incredible opportunity. Thanks to this opportunity, the woman was able to get a visa in the shortest possible time and revive her hope for a happy and safe future.

Secondly, Olga Khamedova talks about her job search experience. Thanks to the "Scientists at risk" program at the University of Manitoba, she had a unique opportunity to continue her scientific studies.

"Even before the trip, I decided that I should know as much as possible about all of the cultural institutions of Ukrainians here and about various events, [so that I could] participate as much as possible in everything that concerns the Ukrainian community in Manitoba. It was necessary for me to help others, to continue living the life I was used to. This was in the circle of many cultural events and working for Ukrainian culture," says Olga.

Now she works in the archive of the Ukrainian cultural and educational centre "Oseredok", where the unique collections of the first Ukrainian newspapers, published by Ukrainians in Manitoba, are kept.

"I am a gender researcher and I am interested in Ukrainian female journalists in Canada. Therefore, I am collecting information about the first female journalists, editors, and publishers of Ukrainian origin who worked in Manitoba," adds Olga.

As for her main activity at the University of Manitoba, Olga's team of Visiting Scholars from Ukraine put on various events that introduce the local community to Ukrainian culture, history, and modern realities.

Their object is "To tell the truth about the war waged by Russia in Ukraine, to debunk the myths of Russian propaganda - we are all soldiers on the information front now. So, in 2022, the team held a round table dedicated to the Ukraine war", says Olga.
