Eastern Charlotte Council Tables Building Bylaw

The June 2024 regular council meeting for the Municipality of Eastern Charlotte, held at Magaguadavic Place in St. George, New Brunswick, covered a wide range of topics from infrastructure improvements to community initiatives.

Building Bylaw EC-12 Tabled
One of the key items on the agenda was the third and final reading of Building Bylaw EC-12. Council decided to table the bylaw until the July meeting to allow for further review and discussion. This decision followed a recommendation from Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jason Gaudet, who stressed the need for additional time to ensure thorough consideration. “We want to make sure that all aspects of the bylaw are thoroughly reviewed and understood by the Council and the community before we proceed,” Gaudet stated.

St. George Capital Fund Allocation Approved
Council approved a substantial capital fund allocation for 2024, amounting to $59,000, designated for various infrastructure projects. These projects include crosswalk improvements near Fundy Middle and High School, tree removal, the purchase of a new mower for public works, and the installation of a crosswalk island. Councillor Alexa Detorakis, who made the motion, emphasized the importance of these projects for community safety and maintenance. “These improvements are essential for ensuring the safety of our students and enhancing the efficiency of our public works operations,” she said.

Community Wheelchair Bus Initiative
A highlight of the meeting was a passionate presentation by Lorraine Justeson, advocating for a community wheelchair bus to serve the regional area. Justeson underscored the need for such a service to support seniors, disabled individuals and children. “We need this bus so everyone can enjoy themselves and get out to socialize. There are currently no vehicles available for those in wheelchairs or who are disabled,” Justeson explained. Her proposal received positive feedback from the Council, with plans to further discuss funding and community support.

Public Works and Parks and Recreation Reports
Council received detailed reports from the Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments. The Public Works report highlighted ongoing road patchwork, crosswalk lining, and water system improvements. Councillor Wayne MacQuarrie praised the efforts of the public works team, stating, “Our crew is doing a fantastic job, especially given the sudden onset of summer weather. They are working tirelessly to maintain our community’s infrastructure.”

The Parks and Recreation report, delivered by Councillor Adam Hatt, noted the successful opening of Canal Beach and the splash pad, despite minor issues. Hatt also mentioned ongoing repairs and upgrades.
