Discussing Events of Crisis in a Constructive Manner
The good is related to the individual, and the awful is related to the community. Unfortunately, most cultures follow this norm, and any wrongdoing or ill-conceived behaviour of the country, religion, or society is blamed on it. As a result, we must exercise caution in our behaviour and ensure that our deeds do not contribute to a negative perception of the Islamic and Arab communities in a foreign land.
Abdeslam Glioula spoke with Abdo Eltassi, Board Chairperson, Islamic Social Services Foundation, Winnipeg. Eltassi stated, "We, as members of the Arab and Islamic community in Winnipeg, must feel responsible towards our culture to which we belong. And to be a good example so as not to call our community incorrect general provisions that do not affect Arab culture in any way. And when we have this responsibility and this commitment, things become easier for everyone."
Eltassi added, "During the 54 years I spent in Canada, I saw a lot of good and immoral behaviour on the part of some individuals. And we worked directly with them with the help of Arab and Islamic organizations to clarify the general picture and educate the members of the Arab and Islamic community in Winnipeg on good behaviour and avoiding violence. We got wonderful results that we are proud of."
Eltassi also clarified that if you were subjected to any racist behaviour, go directly to the police and file a report against the person who assaulted you. The police will investigate, and the judiciary will do justice to everyone. In Canada, if you need a lawyer and do not have the money for his fees, the state provides a free lawyer to help you in your case. Therefore, there is no justification for any immoral behaviour in a country that respects the law and welcomes everyone.
Eltassi stressed the importance of the family in raising generations upright and teaching them excellent manners outside of school so that they may function in society. Similarly, mosques and Islamic groups play a significant role in teaching the youth in the right direction, emphasizing Islam's tolerance and excellent Arab ideals.
