Council Will Receive Applications for Vacant Councilor Position
The Terrace Bay Council meeting on August 11, 2025, opened with an acknowledgment of the Robinson Superior Treaty Territory, a recognition that continues to ground the township’s decision-making in respect for local history and partnerships. Following this, council moved quickly through routine matters, approving both the evening’s agenda and the minutes from its previous meetings on July 14 and August 1.
A major topic of discussion centered on filling a council vacancy created by the resignation of Councillor Burt Johnson on July 31. Under the Municipal Act, council has 60 days to declare the seat vacant and to determine whether to hold a by-election or make an appointment. Administration recommended the latter, suggesting an open public call for applications from community members. After deliberation, council endorsed this approach. Applications from interested residents will be collected over the coming weeks, with the position anticipated to be filled sometime in September. This process will ensure that the community continues to be fully represented as council moves forward with its fall agenda.
Council also considered opportunities to support innovation and learning in the township. Members approved participation in a new municipal innovation internship program, developed in partnership with the MCT and MITACS. The initiative will see a Lakehead University student take part in an AI-related project aimed at advancing local problem-solving and research capacity. To support the program, the township will contribute $15,000 plus HST. Council noted the importance of encouraging young people to gain hands-on experience in municipal government while also bringing fresh perspectives into the community.
In matters of finance, council approved the 2025 property tax levy and tax ratios, key measures for ensuring stable revenues to support township services. Alongside this, an updated tax collection policy was passed. The new policy includes a practical change: a grace period for payments due on weekends, preventing residents from being penalized if deadlines fall when offices are closed. This revised policy will replace the current one beginning in the new year and was welcomed as a small but meaningful improvement for taxpayers.
Attention also turned to community spaces. Council approved the replacement of benches downtown and in several local parks, part of a broader plan to enhance the township’s public areas and improve the overall look of the downtown shopping district. These upgrades are expected to encourage both residents and visitors to spend more time enjoying Terrace Bay’s outdoor spaces and local businesses.
Before closing, council addressed two additional issues. First, a motion was carried to oppose the province’s proposed mandatory firefighter certification requirements, with members voicing concerns about the impact on volunteer fire departments in smaller communities. Second, council approved an adjustment to the arena’s operating season. Instead of opening later in the fall, the rink will now begin operations between September 15 and 30, providing more ice time for local teams, skaters, and community events.
The meeting concluded with council reaffirming its commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with investments in community well-being, innovation, and local representation.
