Українці в кіно Канади: ЯК ПРОБИТИСЬ без зв’язків?

The Gimli Film Festival (GFF) isn’t just a cinematic event—it’s a vibrant hub of community, culture, and opportunity, rooted in Manitoba and increasingly enriched by Winnipeg’s diverse population. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the GFF demonstrates the power of film to connect people, foster talent, and build bridges between communities. Its impact resonates throughout Winnipeg, creating social “plus-value” that extends far beyond the silver screen.

One person embodying this spirit is Hulfiia Sharipova, a coordinator at this year’s festival. Her journey highlights the tangible benefits and social uplift that events like the GFF provide, particularly for newcomers to Winnipeg.

From Volunteer to Coordinator: Dedication and Networking

Hulfiia’s story is a testament to how passion and perseverance can open doors in a new country. Last year, she began as a volunteer, assisting with event setups. Her dedication and proactive approach earned her a promotion this year to coordinator of the Gimli Cinematheque—a significant step up.

“Last year, I got to know everyone, including the owners and founders,” Hulfiia says. Her background in the film industry in Ukraine, combined with her clear communication about her goals, made a strong impression. She emphasizes reliability and networking: “I took every shift I could. Even if I didn’t have a shift, I continued to help without being asked.” Her commitment led to strong references and ultimately secured her current role.

Hulfiia’s experience underscores a crucial “plus-value” of the GFF: it provides Canadian work experience and networking opportunities, particularly for skilled immigrants. Many newcomers arrive with professional expertise but struggle to translate international experience into local opportunities. The festival offers a platform to demonstrate abilities, build connections, and gain Canadian references, paving the way for career growth.

More Than Just a Job: Living the Dream

Hulfiia’s dedication goes beyond typical work hours. She commutes daily from Winnipeg to Gimli for her five-day coordination role and even brings a tent to stay near the festival to fully immerse herself. “When you’re at the film festival all day, you meet new people every day, and they get to know you,” she explains. This level of engagement fosters deeper connections and leaves a lasting impression—crucial for career advancement in a new country.

The festival also cultivates a vibrant, supportive professional community. For those passionate about film, it’s a place where talent is recognized and nurtured. The GFF serves not just as an employer but as a mentor and gateway to the broader Canadian film industry.

Paving the Way for a Ukrainian Film Presence in Manitoba

Looking ahead, Hulfiia has ambitious plans to bring even more “plus-value” to Winnipeg. With her background—including founding a film school in Ukraine—she aims to launch film courses and workshops in Winnipeg for children and teenagers, supporting both Ukrainian-language education and skill development in videography and photography.

“I think we can be very competitive,” Hulfiia says. Her ultimate vision is a dedicated Ukrainian film program at the GFF, showcasing films made by Ukrainian-Canadians in Manitoba. This initiative would celebrate Ukrainian culture, provide a platform for local filmmakers, and strengthen Winnipeg as a creative hub.

A High-Calibre Cultural Event

The GFF is renowned for its programming quality. Past winners include Oscar-nominated films, and audience reactions consistently confirm the exceptional cinematic experience. Beyond screenings, the festival offers volunteers and attendees unique opportunities to engage with the industry.

“You can meet Hollywood directors at this film festival,” Hulfiia enthuses, recalling a masterclass by Guy Nattiv, director of Golda starring Helen Mirren. Accessibility to producers, screenwriters, and actors makes the festival a unique networking opportunity. Free shuttle services from Winnipeg and volunteer accommodations further democratize access, allowing a broader audience to benefit.

These features contribute to the festival’s social “plus-value,” breaking down barriers for aspiring filmmakers and providing direct industry insights.

A Message of Openness and Opportunity

Hulfiia’s advice to newcomers in the film industry is simple: be open. “Canadians are very helpful. If they see your passion, they really help; they give contacts, they try to do something for you,” she observes. This spirit of openness is a hallmark of the GFF and the Winnipeg community.

Through its commitment to cinematic excellence, nurturing local talent, and embracing diverse communities, the Gimli Film Festival offers significant social “plus-value” to Winnipeg—a place where dreams take flight, connections are forged, and the love of film unites us all.
