Two Candidates Vie for Vacant Neepawa Town Council Seat

Neepawa, Manitoba — Two candidates have officially stepped forward to contest the open seat on Neepawa Town Council, following the resignation of Councillor Lisa Pottinger last month.

Instead of a traditional debate or moderated panel, the Neepawa and District Chamber of Commerce hosted a drop-in open house, allowing community members to meet and speak with the candidates in a more informal, conversational setting.

Sheri Grant, who previously served on Council, described herself as a lifelong political enthusiast and “the kind of councillor you will still see after the campaign.” She said she feels this is an exciting and pivotal time for Neepawa and hopes to contribute her experience and energy to support its continued growth. Grant emphasized her desire to give back to the town that played a major role in raising her family, especially as it adapts to evolving needs.

Dave Clark, a longtime Neepawa resident with a background in recreation, said he’s always had a strong interest in local government. Now, at a point in his life where he can dedicate more time to public service, he’s eager to get involved in helping shape the town’s future. Clark noted the town’s recent changes have inspired him to run, and said he sees major potential in projects like a proposed recreation centre—something he’s been personally involved with through years of volunteer work.

When asked how they would engage underrepresented or politically disengaged groups in the community, Grant proposed the creation of a youth council member position to ensure young people have a voice at the table. Clark suggested encouraging youth to join local volunteer boards, where they can gain experience and build stronger ties to the civic process.

On major policy issues such as housing availability and road maintenance, both candidates acknowledged there is still more to learn. They expressed a desire to first understand the town’s ongoing plans and current strategies before offering firm positions or proposals.

The by-election will take place on July 16, with polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Neepawa Town Council office.
