The final episode of News & Views for 2024 is packed with holiday events and highlights but also features an important update from Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure.
Manitoba’s Multi-Year Infrastructure Investment Strategy
On December 20, the Province released the Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure 2024/25 Multi-Year Infrastructure Investment Strategy, a comprehensive 124-page report outlining transportation plans and priorities across the province. While most projects fall outside our immediate area, one key element stands out.
A cornerstone of the report is the Improve Road Safety Strategy, which builds on extensive consultations and research conducted at PTH 5 and PTH 1—the site of last year’s tragic bus crash near Carberry. This strategy aims not only to enhance safety in that specific area but also to establish a model for improving road safety across Manitoba. The report emphasizes a “comprehensive and holistic approach” to developing effective solutions for communities impacted by road safety concerns.
Key Highway Improvements
The report also details planned improvements to Highway 5 south of PTH 2. Although this area lies outside our immediate region, it is a vital transportation route for local farmers, particularly for shipping hogs to the HyLife pork processing plant in Neepawa. Poor highway conditions have long hindered cross-border trade, so it will be important to monitor how these upgrades progress.
