Newcomer Network: Facing Language Barriers as Newcomers

Communication is the cornerstone of human interaction, a bridge that connects us across diverse backgrounds, cultures, and personalities. In a world where people constantly find themselves in new places and situations, the ability to express oneself in a common language becomes a valuable skill.

Faezeh Khadem, an English teacher, understands the challenges individuals face when learning and using English as a second language. In this insightful conversation, she shares her knowledge and experience to inspire those on the journey of mastering this global language.

"To be honest, we just want to talk about it. Whether you're a mother, a father, or living alone, the need for communication is universal. We all come from different places with unique backgrounds and personalities. We want to express ourselves, but it's a significant challenge that goes beyond what we might initially think."

Khadem emphasizes the importance of patience in the process of learning English. She acknowledges that becoming proficient in the language is not quick and may take years. However, she underscores the significance of English as a communication tool, emphasizing that it opens doors to connecting with people from various walks of life.

"As an English teacher, I always tell my students that being proficient in another language requires a balance of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Your speaking and writing skills are a reflection of your ability to listen and read. It's a holistic approach to language learning."

Having experienced the warmth of Canadian people, Khadem believes that the multicultural environment fosters understanding for those grappling with English as a second language. Canadians, she notes, are supportive and patient, recognizing the challenges newcomers face in expressing themselves in a foreign language.

"The key is to describe things using different words. If you can't recall a specific term, express your intention and the message will get across. I'm available to help – don't hesitate to ask. Pronunciation matters; practice with correct pronunciation. Speaking slowly but accurately is better than rushing with mistakes. Don't worry about your speed; fluency will come with time."

Khadem emphasizes the need to avoid perfectionism when learning a language. The journey to proficiency is a gradual process, and setting unrealistic expectations can hinder progress.

"Perfectionists may struggle to learn another language because they focus too much on correctness. Be patient; improvement happens over time. Celebrate small victories and embrace the journey. Speed will come naturally as you become more comfortable with the language. Just ensure that you pronounce words correctly – that's the foundation of effective communication."

Faezeh Khadem's insights guide those navigating the intricate path of learning English as a second language. With patience, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous improvement, individuals can unlock the full potential of communication and connect with the world around them.
