Winnipeg's Healthy Muslim Families Holds Informative Workshop To Combat Diabetes

This November, Healthy Muslim Families (HMF) proactively addressed a pressing health concern by organizing the Diabetes Awareness Workshop.

This pivotal event aimed to shine a spotlight on diabetes, an issue of paramount importance in Winnipeg and served as an educational platform, providing vital information, support, and strategies to combat and manage diabetes effectively.

Amna Iqbal, a director of programs at HMF, explained that building this organization is to help and strengthen families.

"The diabetes workshop is a great initiative from our community because most programs are built upon community requests and what our community would like to see and attend. The second reason is diabetic awareness. We deal with everyone, mainly newcomer and immigrant families, including seniors, women, youth, and children. The workshop is also designed to create awareness about how we can take proactive measures to prevent disease and how we can educate our community members."

By gathering experts, sharing knowledge, and engaging participants in discussions, the event encouraged a proactive approach to tackling diabetes. The initiative undertaken by Healthy Muslim Families highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare and community engagement. This workshop equipped attendees with essential tools to understand, manage, and prevent diabetes, empowering them to make informed health decisions.

Iqbal added that the workshop discussed type 1 and type 2 diabetes and how they affect people differently.

"If women are pregnant and have diabetes, what consequences can they have after the delivery of the baby? Then, we explain how diabetes transfers from you through your family history and other types. We need to get out of all those dilemmas and challenges and see where we must take them."

This event is a testament to HMF's dedication to promoting a healthier community. Their efforts in educating and raising awareness about diabetes have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on Winnipeg's community health landscape.
