Local Conference Increasing Awareness of Therapeutic Recreational Opportunities for Winnipeggers
In early November, at Winnipeg's The Leaf in Assiniboine Park, Recreation Manitoba organized the Therapeutic Recreation Conference, a beacon for anyone supporting others through recreational pursuits.
Tailored for caregivers, programmers, and aides, the Therapeutic Recreation Conference presented diverse sessions to provide those dedicated to tending to others with new insights from the industry. These sessions were focused on the welfare and advocated for the delivery of top-tier therapeutic recreational opportunities.
Chris Edwards, a board member at Recreation Manitoba, explained, as a Winnipegger himself, that sometimes it's challenging to find recreational opportunities within the city, and events like this open eyes to what is available.
"As a local Winnipegger, I think we have really recognized the importance of recreation and multiple capacities last year. Having more of those resources for local people to understand the importance of recreational leisure programming is vital to our community."
This conference is not just a gathering—it is a space where knowledge meets compassion, where expertise merges with empathy. It is an invitation for caregivers and recreational supporters to explore new dimensions of care, share experiences, and gain insights that elevate the quality of recreational experiences for those they serve.
According to Edwards, information learned at these events directly enriches the lives of others in the community.
"Whether that's people in long-term care, accessing our recreation in community, whether that's through our leisure facilities, and even teaching people about places like The Leaf. This is a great venue, and people are coming here and priming, thinking this is somewhere that I would like to bring people that I serve."
Recreation Manitoba opens doors to a realm of possibilities in therapeutic recreation. This event is not just about knowledge but about empowering caregivers to enrich lives and strengthening the fabric of support and care within Winnipeg's community.
