Pride Celebration Carries On Amid Uneasy Political Climate

Despite concerns earlier in the summer, Neepawa’s Got Pride 2025 went off without a hitch, with even a looming thunderstorm holding off until the event had fully concluded. Following the abrupt cancellation of Steinbach Pride due to credible threats, Winnipeg Pride arranged for additional security at Neepawa’s event to ensure the safety of all participants, but fortunately, no incidents occurred. The event was a clear demonstration of the community’s resilience and commitment to inclusivity.

“For the 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, adults, and families that call this area home, we guarantee we will keep showing up, even when it gets tough, so that future generations will find our home safe,” said organizer Rhian Beever in her opening statement, setting a hopeful and determined tone for the day.

The celebration included a vendor’s market featuring local artisans and businesses, a variety of information booths, and children’s activities such as storytime with the local library. Attendees were also treated to drag performances from the House of Hex, adding a lively and entertaining element to the festivities. People came from across the province, reflecting the event’s growing reputation as a welcoming and inclusive space for all.

Over the same weekend, the annual Terry Fox Run took place, drawing participants from across the region. NACTV spoke with organizers and participants about the significance of the event and its impact over the years. One recurring theme stood out: year after year, not only do friends and family participate, but more cancer survivors are now joining the run themselves, celebrating their health and perseverance. This long-term impact reinforces the meaningful legacy of Terry Fox’s mission and inspires the next generation of participants.

In addition, other community events brought both current and potential volunteers out into the public. Volunteer Manitoba hosted a volunteer fair to highlight the many organizations in the area that rely on community support, giving attendees an opportunity to explore ways to get involved. Meanwhile, the Neepawa-Gladstone Co-op held its annual Fuel Good Day, donating a portion of all gas purchases to local charities. This year, the Neepawa Area Health Auxiliary was chosen as the recipient, ensuring that funds raised went directly to benefit healthcare services in the region.
