Port Moody Celebrates Golden Spike Days and Canada Day at Rocky Point Park

Once again the City of Port Moody celebrated Canada Day in conjunction with their Golden Spike Days celebrations. - Report by LJI reporter Geoff Scott.

This year Port Moody's Golden Spike Days Society celebrated it's 48th annual Golden Spike Days Festival which is the city's nod to it's significant railway history. Port Moody being named in the Canadian Constitution as the western terminus of the, yet to be built, national railway.

The first scheduled passenger train arrived at the western terminus of Port Moody on July 4, 1886. Soon after, the terminus was moved further west to Gastown which quickly transformed into the City of Vancouver.

Port Moody wound up missing the boat.....err, train...well, both. Celebrate good times, come on !

Despite the snub years ago by the millionaires with CPR who added to their fortunes by profiting off land speculators who thought that Port Moody was going to be the next Montreal, The City of Port Moody let it go and started celebrating Golden Spike Days in the late 70's.

To this day Golden Spike Days is the "must attend" event for Port Moody residents. It features family friendly activities, a local talent show, can-can dancers, and this year's headliners were Streetheart.

Those in the know make sure to attend the Port Moody Firefighters Pancake Breakfast before they attend the festival. It's a good opportunity to load up on a hearty breakfast and donate to a good cause at the same time.

This year Golden Spike Days were held Saturday to Monday and, of course, the Canada Day celebrations were held on Tuesday, July 1st. As usual it featured an opportunity to hear from local dignitaries who came out to partake in the celebrations.
