MP Jake Sawatzky Introduces Himself to City Council

At the New Westminster City Council meeting of July 7, 2025, the new Member of Parliament for the City introduced himself - Jake Sawatzky. Mr. Sawatzky represents the Riding of New Westminster-Burnaby and Maillardville.

As a candidate representing the Liberals in the recent federal riding, he won the riding occupied by long-time MP for New Westminster-Burnaby, Peter Julian, who had been in the seat for 20 years. He had most recently been the House Leader for the New Democratic Party and key figure in the party for many years.

Mr. Sawatzky explained that he is on the Finance Committee of the new government, an associate member of the Health Committee, and part of the Youth, Technology and Health Caucuses.

He emphasized his desire to collaborate with community members, indigenous leaders, and City Council. The councillors each welcomed him independently and indicated that there were many fronts where federal funding would be appreciated. Several said that they appreciated that Mr. Sawatzky had been seen actively connecting with many members of the community and community organizations.

His constituency office is now up and running at 888 Carnarvon - formerly Peter Julian's constituency office, he explained, with talented people there to help out. Within a month, his office is to be moved uptown, although he did not divulge the location.

Jake Sawatzky was born in 2000, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at the University of British Columbia last year. He was going to continue his studies to get a masters degree in Counselling Psychology, however becoming an MP has changed his life course for the time being.
