COVID-19 Community Information Session
Wikwemikong Health Centre provided a pandemic information session on March 9, 2020, regarding the COVID-19 outbreak, that was livestreamed on the community channel.
Speakers included Ogimaa Pelter, Primary Care Manager Theresa Pangowish, Health Services Director Mary Jo Wabano, Wikwemikong Tribal Police Chief Terry McCaffrey, Nursing Home Administrator Cheryl Osawabine Peltier, Longterm Care Manager Yvette Corbiere, Child Services Manager Judy Black, and Systems Principal Michael Staruck from the Wikwemikong Board of Education.
Community leaders and department heads informed the public what steps the First Nation would be taking in order to ensure the health and safety of it's residents. Hygiene and social distancing measures were discussed, as well as possible procedures that would be put in place should an infection be found in the community, the potential for a community 'lock down', and other possibilities that may arise due to this virus. The safety of the community is paramount, especially the elders, many of whom are Anishnawbemowin language speakers.
